Technicians are working to ensure phone services in the Christchurch region are operating normally.

The network remains stable, despite a 7.1 magnitude earthquake which struck 30km west of the city in the early hours of this morning.

Chorus spokesman Robin Kelly says technicians are working to ensure all fixed line services will operate through an extended power outage.

Additional teams are being brought in from around the country to ensure the network’s stability.
