Police have regained control of Bali's Kerobokan jail after prisoners rioted.

Prison staff abandoned the notoriously overcrowded facility last night after the prisoners hurled stones and set fires.

Hundreds on police, including the elite paramilitary division, massed around the ground. They fired warning shots in the air before injured prisoners emerged, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

Armed police reinforcements were on high alert for potential escapes. They are now in control and have enforced a lock-down.

Kerobokan prison officials and staff are yet to make an official statement.

Schapelle Corby and the Bali Nine drug traffickers are among the more than 1,000 inmates.
