Auckland Mayor Len Brown was bestowed with the title of Taua’aletoa – Taua’a the warrior - and blessed by the Samoan Prime Minister at a ceremony last night, Talamua Media reports.

Mr Brown has been in Samoa leading a delegation of New Zealand business representatives, aiming to boost investment and trade in the region.

The Mayor made an emotional speech after receiving the title in Lepa, the village of Prime Minister Tuilaepa Fatialofa Lupesolai Sailele Malielegaoi.

“I would fight for those who have no hope,” he said to the gathering of village chiefs.

“I know the significance of the title, the commitment and expectation it carries.

“I may be a 'palagi' by colour but my heart is with the Pacific people.”

Photos of the ceremony were posted online on the Facebook page of Labour MP Su’a William Sio.

They show Mr Brown shirtless in his ceremonial attire.

Actually, I am very stoked that Len Brown got an honorary title. For those who don't understand it, honorary titles are simply that, honorary. It doesn't mean it takes away from your family your own right to the pule, so Sese Jr, continue your Tautua and you too will get to pule in future, provided you do so with honesty ma Lou iloa o lau aganuu. And in any case, every Tom dick and Sione has a title these days so what's the big deal? It's what you personally can do for your guu and aiga. Thank you for the question
