Piha Beach, on Auckland's west coast, is a magnet for visitors - particularly in summer. But until now it has been serviced by just one shop.

Some of the locals didn't want another shop, and they fought developers all the way to the Environment Court.

Whatever side of the argument you're on, Piha has come out of it three-and-a-half years later with a new coffee shop, which opened for business today.

Hey Julia, tell me you don't have a vested interest, honestly. It feeds into your business right?? Some peoples opinions are just based on their feelings & their intuitions, that is valid & open minded - do you deny people that? If they don't agree with you are they wrong? Or is their right to an opinion just as valid as yours? You feel you have the right to your opinion don't you? and incidentally I probably will never have a coffee there because it is not part of my Piha & that is ok with me, can you allow me that? A moron is a person who doesn't think for themselves. A person with integrity is one who has no unspoken self interest dressed up otherwise.

Ho hum....get over it. We have it and it is gorgeous with fantastic food and lots of locals loving it. There are always envious morons in the world."Franko" and "Steve" are examples of them. Piha is full of odd bods but usually people who sit in cafes are harmless and not damaging others. Lets hope F &S dont go to the cafe. By the way, where is your garden Franko?

"The Winner Takes It All" - yeah that is about right & that is what it was all about. Andy "old people should move over" Higgs shows his true colours & lack of respect despite all his greenwash - everyone collects water off their roof at Piha bro - you ain't special. A cafe in Piha isn't the end of the world, everyone has a different opinion & they are all entitled to that, for or against, but don't give me any self righteous bull#*#t, the name of the company "Preserve Piha" says it all - what about a little more honesty like - "lets make some money out of Piha". I don't have any great objection to a cafe at Piha but I'm not that keen on greed dressed up as altruism - we'll see how long it takes for the cafe to be onsold, possibly on to a major corporation.

What a pleasure it is for us to have a cool cafe which is still very in keeping with Piha and with the best coffee I have tasted in NZ. Well done yous fellas. The fight was ridiculous, but you have shown them."The Winner Takes It All". Oh and by the way, it is the only cafe in Piha not the second one.
