The bodies of 29 men killed in the Pike River Coal mine could be recovered within three years, according to a report commissioned by the victims' families.

The review concluded that if the mine is sold, the recovery operation could be completed by June 2015, Radio New Zealand reports.

The families' lawyer, Nicholas Davidson QC, says the report is the first assessment of a recovery time-frame that the families have had since the men died in explosions in November 2010.

He says if the mine is bought and if the purchaser can reach the coal, they can get the bodies.

But Grey District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn says 2015 is too long a wait for the families, who need the bodies recovered for closure.

Workers are expected to reach 2.3km down into the mine in a few weeks - and that will be within 100 metres of the men's bodies, Mr Kokshoorn says.

"I don't know why it takes that long; I haven't had that information given to me yet, but I feel it is too lengthy a time to wait."

@ Sue - even in war you give your enemy a decent burial! This isnt war besides - its 29 men who went to work in good faith to earn a living for their loved ones and had the right to expect the workplace to be safe! Trust you enjoyed your Christmas sue - supposedly a Christian time - personally I believe leaving those guys to rot inside that place while most people in NZ enjoyed Christmas with their loved ones is the most unchristian, immoral and disgusting thing I have ever heard of in the history of this country! Its a National (excuse the pun) disgrace and makes me ashamed to be a Kiwi!

ok its time the families of pike river stopped blaming anyone and everyone . people have a right to get on with there lives as you should be doing . many soldiers families have to have funerals for our boys who have beem blasted by bombs and we do not have bodies to bury. Come on its getting out of hand when people cant move forward why is it insensitive for them to look forward . Im really sick of media and families who just don't wont to move on. We all lose people everyday but you don't see us keeping it alive . Move on but remember them privately don't make your relitives death an ongoing publicity stunt for goodness sake have some decency

Shame on the Dept of Labour and their inspectorate for letting this happen in the first place, so much for health and safety in the work place.

There won't be any bodies to recover; the blasts and heat will have seen to that. Ashes mixed with debris will be all.

Was Mark Cummins - the successful US Coal Mine firefighting expert who has continually claimed through this blog that he can assist NZ Mines Rescue recover these bodies safely - ever been consulted by any NZ authority of the person that conducted this independent report? - If not why not?
