The first person to swim across the Cook Strait has died at the age of 75.

New Zealander Barrie Devenport swam the 26km from the North Island to the South in 1962.

He was diagnosed with cancer two years ago and passed away just before midnight last night.

A memorial service will be held on the Gold Coast in Australia next week.
