When his girlfriend refused to pick up his dog's excrement from the kitchen floor, Dunedin's Jayden Lombardi picked it up with his bare hands and chased her through the house with it.

The 19-year-old then encouraged his pitbulls to attack two police officers when they were called and found him on a bed with a bleeding hand, Dunedin District Court was told on Thursday, the Otago Daily Times reports.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Graeme Evans said Lombardi and his partner, Charlie-Joy Beattie-Creed, were arguing about who should pick up dog excrement from the kitchen floor.

She refused and an aggressive Lombardi, who had been on tight bail conditions for five months, picked up the faeces in his bare hands and chased her.

She ran from the house but returned and locked him out. Lombardi smashed a window to get back in and Ms Beattie-Creed called police.

The two officers arrived and saw Lombardi asleep on his bed, with fresh blood coming from a hand wound.

When they asked him to come outside a large pitbull, named Killer, jumped through the open window and ran off.

The officers went to restrain a confrontational Lombardi and his two smaller dogs "jumped into the act".

The dogs were pepper sprayed but Lombardi encouraged them to attack both officers and they were bitten.

Lombardi, who admitted using the dogs as weapons, resisting officers, and intimidating his partner, was sentenced to 180 hours' community work.

The two smaller dogs were put down and Killer is still missing.

Calling all animal abusers!! Come to New Zealand where it doesn't matter what you do, the worst you'll get is community service! Yessiree, New Zealand will handle you with kid gloves and give you the soft option every time. Two dogs are dead but hey, after all, they're just animals. And cops are tough. They'll get over it. "But she accepted ... that the defendant had been on restrictive bail conditions for five months with no breach; he had not committed any further offences and had a very positive report from probation about completing his release conditions. Lombardi wanted to do a limited service volunteer course and the judge agreed ... as the defendant was approaching 20, he was realising there was more to life than living it as he had been." Awwww, the dear boy. Completely rehabilitated. By Crikey those wet bus tickets are EFFECTIVE! Wonder what his next dogs will be. Thanks Judge.

This is sentence just shows how bad New Zealand justice system is, when after reading a actile about a father and daughter having a sexual relationship get 200 hours comminuty service and have to go to councelling and aren't aloowed to see each other unless supervised by an adult when really they are both concending adults who have an illness and arent doing any harm to anyone and they get trated more badly than this guy!!! our Justice system really needs an over haul then maybe we wouldnt have so many crimes happening considering they only get a slap on the hand. Shame on our system.

Kikiki...that man should see a psychiatrist. According to our African Shona culture dog excreta causes bad luck to females. Female must not touch or sweep dog excreta.

Pathetic is all that can be said about the consequences of illegal/criminal actions in N.Z. No wonder our society is becoming such a bad place to live in. Shame on our legal system!

180 hours community service!!!! what a joke!!! people like that are dangerous. no wonder they never learn, all they get is a slap on the hand. the justice system is a joke!! lets stop good parents from disciplining their own children when necessary (and in the mean time create a generation of bratz) - but fail to enforce the laws that are already in place to supposedly protect us. why do judges feel so sorry for repeat offenders?? if criminals actually got severe sentences first up, maybe the jails wouldn't b so full of repeat offenders and people who don't see the punishment as being all that bad. those poor dogs!!! all they did was listen to their owner. if anyone was to be put down it should be the owner!!
