A group opposed to the controversial Wellywood sign is planning another protest, after surveyors were yesterday seen mapping out its proposed site.
Wellington International Airport had earlier said it would reconsider plans for the sign on the Miramar hillside, after a number of objections.
Organisers of tomorrow night’s protest say it will be peaceful and the group does not support calls for vandalism of the sign.
The sign has been labelled cheesy, tacky and a “copycat”.
A protest was underway last Monday night after residents blasted the “horrible” idea, and the airport for “not listening to the people of Wellington”.
The group of around 40 cars spent an hour circling Wellington Airport’s drop-off route.
The 3-metres high, 28-metre long Hollywood imitation is to be in place by the Rugby World Cup.
Wellington Airport’s chief executive Steve Fitzgerald says any opposition to it now is wasted.
“The reaction is basically the same as the reaction we had over 12 months ago, when we did pause and ask people for other ideas. We’ve considered those ideas, so there’s nothing to stop us proceeding at this point,” he says.
