The Government has restored funding to Plunketline, allowing the service to operate 24 hours a day.

Aaron Woodmore is two years old, and his mum Rebecca says in his short life, she has relied heavily on Plunketline for advice and support.

"I would not be the mother I am, as calm and confident as I am, if were not for Plunketline," she says. "That's what it's done for me."

She says the Government's move to restore funding to the service is critical.

"Sometimes you will have a screaming six-week-old child at three o'clock in the morning," says Ms Woodmore. "You don't know if they're just hungry, but sometimes just a calm voice on the end of the phone is really what you need."

Today's announcement had health minister Tony Ryall so excited, he popped a question that left his wife speechless.

"Do you think we could have another one?"

If they do, they can now call Plunketline 24 hours a day, seven days a week for free advice and support, and taxpayers will pay $3 million a year for this election promise that Mr Ryall says is permanent.

"I can give you an assurance that the Government is committed to Plunket and Plunketline."

The Government will also continue to fund a parallel service, Healthline.

"It's my expectations we should be able to provide both those services," says Mr Ryall. "Parents like the choice."

Plunket managed to keep the lines partially open through donations since funds were cut in 2006, but says it must be available around the clock.

"Seventy-two thousand families are ringing us and asking questions, so the service is in demand," says Lynn McKenzie.
