Police make an arrest last night in Dunedin

Police Minister Judith Collions has slammed students involved in a second night of rioting in Dunedin, calling them "rich little white kids".

Ms Collins praised the work of police officers who came out in force after the party that follows the annual car rally descended into chaos.

Bottles and bricks were thrown at police, and around 70 arrests were made over two nights of rioting.

Ms Collins is backing calls for the event to be cancelled next year.

People generally only start rioting when they have no job, no food and no future. Maybe Judith should stop pointing the finger and find a mirror.

This event used to be good fun, not the mess its become. These students are ruining the event for future generations, and for what? Do they enjoy rioting with no political motive, nothing to gain? Complete losers, they should all be convicted, if it was South Auckland they would be!

ok, the media have run with this and will probably flog it to death (but not managed to spell her name correctly, in fact typos abound on nz web news pages, who is proofreading anything these days?) but i was not impressed with her remark, and bet she wishes she'd kept her flip, incorrect, racist and insulting comment to herself.

They are a bunch of poor little and probably white rich kids, how many of you lot actually finish something at uni ? So stop going on about being the future of NZ, and as for your poor living conditions - I spend most of my time in the third world and let me tell you its nothing like what you experience and they behave them selves and are actually qualified. Just pull your head in you lot and accept the fact you started some thing that decent NZ's dont want to see so it should be banned.

Politicaians should be more careful when making comments on their voting public. If this Minister made the same comment about the Maori radicals she would have lost her job (at least)!!!

wow big call Judith, i live on $160/week ($110 of that goes to rent for a house which is substandard to many peoples expectations) and the money that i spread out over the year that i manage to save from the summer break. For her to come out and put that label on us is utter rubbish, has she checked out the level of student debt in this country and the average income of our parents to be able to make that call? Her comments are disrespectful and put her on the same level as the students that got arrested over the weekend.

Henry just because you have a few letters at the end of your name does not make you an authority on life, in your case it sounds more of a hindrance (arrogance)..... check out some of our prisons you will find a few in there who are more qualified than you... and I don't mean that they are there to represent any client's.

Some of these idiots say they don't have money but they binge drink like it's going out of fashion... is mummy and daddy paying for it. I enjoyed studying at Otago but you have these wanna be insecure dick heads, who think drinking and rioting is a good way of showing the world that New Zealand is a nation that raises up ALCOHOLICS to one day make important decision for thousands of peoples lives. Why do we let a minority of self centered morons do so much damage, is it because they know that there are NO!!! real repercussions to there actions and future.... lets see some real penalty's handed to these law breaking shitheads.

This comment is completely stupid. Sure what happened was rubbish. I was there, not as apart of the 'riot' but behind the police lines observing. Calling Dunedin university student who live off basically $150 a week at the most rich and spoilt is ridiculous. Have you seen the condition of the flats we live in or the food we eat?? Students here are the future of New Zealand and many will become better and more highly educated than this stupid, state owned bimbo who thinks she can say what she likes... she is only a police minister nothing more. As for the white comment, well as another person stated if she said maori or asian the media would be having a field day. I think she needs to get out of Wellington and see the conditions we live in. I am 5th year law with honors and about to do a Phd, when she can get those qualifications then she can say stupid remarks like this. Again i do not agree with what happened on Castle Street and thought the police who were there did a good job.... if only the minister could follow the trend and do her job properly.
