Police searching for a 44-year-old man who disappeared from a ferry in Foveaux Straight say there is little hope of finding him alive.

A search and rescue operation was launched last night after it was discovered the man was missing when the ferry reached Stewart Island.

An aerial shoreline search of the island and north Mutton Bird Island is taking place today.

Police have refused to comment on reports the man had left a suicide note.

They would confirm they found a note in the man’s belongings and say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with his disappearance.
