Police would only say the man was middle aged and was found dead in a house in Watling St, Gate Pa

Police have appealed for help from the public after the body of a man was found in a house in suburban Tauranga today following an overnight disturbance.

Police would only say the man was middle aged and was found dead in a house in Watling St, Gate Pa, about 7am.

His death was being treated as suspicious and 26 police were working on the case.

Until a post mortem was done in Auckland tonight they could say little about the cause of death, Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner from Tauranga police said.

He said neighbours had told police they heard a disturbance at the house late last night and police wanted to hear from anyone who may have heard or seen anything in the street overnight.

"We are also very keen to hear from anyone who may have been at the Watling St address in the past 48 hours."
