Police in Gisborne have arrested six teenagers after a convoy of stolen Subaru cars were chased along winding rural roads in the early hours of this morning.

Police spotted the three cars driving in convoy along State Highway 2, on the outskirts of Gisborne, at around 2am.

The cars took different routes when approached by police and a pursuit had to be abandoned after the driving became erratic and speeds reached as high as 170km/h.

Police spent two hours following the cars, which they believe were stolen to be taken for a joyride, on various rural roads between Gisborne and Wairoa.

Police arrested two occupants in each car, all from the Gisborne area - two girls, both aged 15, and four males aged 16 to 19, the New Zealand Herald reports.

Police are still looking for a fourth car believed to have been stolen by the same group.

old enough to drive, old enough to know better, even though the girls at 15 were passengers i bet they have the same mentality as the drivers. Probably bleat later that they didn't know the cars were stolen etc. yeah right.
