Fourteen people have been arrested in Christchurch as police launch a crackdown on criminals with outstanding arrest warrants.

More than 70 officers across the city swooped on houses early this morning, looking for people who have failed to turn up for court appearances.

District Commander Gary Knowles says police will keep up the pressure.

“We’re going to do this on a regular basis,” he says. “So it’s a real chance to say to people, ‘if you know you’re wanted on warrant, and you think that there’s a chance you’re going to be arrested, you will be’.

“Front up and be honest and come into the system. A lot of people that we’ve knocked on this morning at 5:30am got a bit of a shock that we’d do this.”

Mr Knowles says police also found a quantity of marijuana at one of the properties.
