Whanganui Police are hunting the man who gave former mayor Michael Laws a black eye at the weekend.
The RadioLIVE host was at a bar with a companion at around 11:30pm on Friday night when he was punched in the face.
“I had entered the premises with a companion and exchanged pleasantries with a number of bar patrons at approximately 11:30pm on Friday evening," says Mr Laws.
"I was on my way home from attending another function. As I walked into the area of the bar where the band was playing, I was attacked from behind by an assailant.
"It was entirely unprovoked and I had neither exchanged words nor looks with this individual."
He says he's heard it was gang-related, as he's been championing anti-gang legislation. He called the attacker a "coward".
Mr Laws says he's not seriously hurt but has suffered some damage to his right eye, cheekbone and mouth.
Later this year Mr Laws plans to step into the ring with Maori activist Ken Mair later this year in a charity boxing match.
