Police have named the man killed on Tuesday night in a vehicle accident just north of State Highway 1 near Pokeno.

Auckland man Graham Watson was driving north in a white Toyota Levin when he crashed into a furniture removal truck that had broken down on the stretch of road between Pokeno and the Bombay interchange.

The truck had broken down at around 8pm and was stationary with its brake and hazard lights on.

Mr Watson was seen by a witness swerving over the road before driving into the back of the furniture track. He died after the crash.

The Serious Crash Unit is continuing to investigate the accident and police want to talk to anyone who saw the crash or was in contact with Mr Watson in the days beforehand.

Spent time in the mid-80 with Graham and his cat (Buzz - who used to travel in his car and into uni with him) at his Parnell flat and around campus. My memories: larger than life, incredibly charismatic, witty, charming, persuasive, could not give 2c what anyone else thought, and just a whole lot of fun. Sad to hear of his early passing. I will remember some fun times.

Like Angus has commented here before me, Graham was a legend on so many levels. He was a brother, a friend, a campaigner for the underdog, the giver of anything you needed, a comedian, an outstanding orator, a brilliant politician, the life of the party, the father of the Auckland Uni drinking horn - he actually had a truck supertanker of beer driven onto the university so we could not drink the event dry! He was king of the crossword, his smile was infectious and if he called you his friend you knew it meant for life. The world is a little less today without him but all the richer for him being here in the first place. I for one cannot wait to see your glassy-eyed grin again when one day we share another hug and tear of true friendship. RIP Graham were simply the best. Your mate, Cliffy

No one who went through Auckland University in the late eighties would have done so without knowing the name Graham Watson. The Presient of the Auckland University Stuents Association for an unprecedented three years, Graham was a legend regardless of your political views. He went on to be the secretary of the Act Party. Graham was one of the most extraordinary people I have ever met and we are devastated at his passing.
