A man who walked up to an armed police officer saying "shoot me, shoot me" has been arrested after reports of street fighting near Nelson.

Police say they received a calls from residents in Stoke about 4:45pm on Monday, about a group of up to 10 men, armed with axes and bats, fighting in Karaka St.

When police arrived at the scene, they found no one fighting, but two men were arrested shortly afterwards.

A 23-year-old approached an armed police officer saying "shoot me, shoot me" but the officer put away his gun and used pepper spray to subdue him. He was charged with possessing a knife.

A 25-year-old was also charged with possessing an axe.

Nelson Bays Area Commander Inspector Steve Greally says there is nothing to suggest the incident was related to any organised group and there have been no reports of injuries.
