Whanganui police have launched a homicide investigation

Police hope CCTV footage will help the homicide investigation after the death of a two-month-old in Whanganui.

Hinekawa Topia, a triplet, was driven to Wanganui Hospital by her parents Tiffany Topia and Tom McGregor, on Thursday afternoon.

She wasn't breathing and resuscitation attempts by her father and hospital staff were unsuccessful, police say.

A post-mortem examination has revealed Hinekawa died of non-accidental head injuries.

Background inquiries are being made to help build a picture of events before Hinekawa's death and her health, Detective Senior Sergeant Neil Forlong said.

"We have to be thorough and meticulous and work closely with medical professionals, the pathologist and Hinekawa's family. That process will take time and should not be rushed."

Det Snr Sgt Forlon would not be drawn on the nature of Hinekawa's injuries.

Police will be speaking to a number of people today as Hinekawa had recently stayed at both the family home and with extended whanau

"We fully acknowledge the sensitivities of cases such as this and it is important that people do not leap to conclusions and start pointing fingers prematurely,” Det Snr Sgt Forlorn said.

"We have to be thorough and meticulous and work closely with medical professionals, the pathologist and Hinekawa's family. That process will take time and should not be rushed."

Police are understood to be sourcing CCTV footage to assist them, but would not comment on the nature of the footage.

Hinekawa's funeral was held on Sunday. Mr Forlon said the family is in a state of shock and grief.

About 20 police are working on the investigation.

One house in Whanganui and one in south Taranaki have been examined by forensic scientists in relation to the investigation.

Child, Youth and Family has interim custody of Hinekawa's triplet sisters and a five-year-old boy.

if my child dies and its non accidental, then thats what happens, the other children need to be protected until people can determin what happened.. so think before you speak moral outrage... i didnt say anything about poor families etc,the death has been ruled not to be accident so then this is what happens... now if the children wherent taken away and then a second child was to be taken dead to the hospital you would be going on and on about how nothing was done to protect them... get over yourself, this is what happens when unexplained deaths occur.. and when everything is determined they will go back to their family, as long as its safe...

So @ Mia & Virgo. You think this blanket rule of yours should apply to all parents of babies whose birth may have had complications that compromise them " just in case" . That all kids presenting with 'accidents" should be removed as a 'precautionary measure". Or just brown and low socio ones? Paula Bennett and John key agree with you. Read the Green Paper and hope it is not your children next. There is a policy in there for every parental situation and grounds to remove any child from any parent at any time. Are you happy to hand your over now?? I hope this whole debacle is not a witch hunt by over zealous hospital staff and police as suggested by @martin, over a brain bleed from a rapid birth. It is disturbing that the paranoia about low socio parents harming their kids was stirred up by CYF staff from the same old offices ignoring notifications, neglect of duty and covering up horrific child abuse . Why not a hue and cry over CYF????

Another Kahui repeat.. Will anybody ever be charged..
The death was "Non Accidental" - if people will not talk lock them up for obstructing justice until someone does.As for "pondering" they are lower than farm animals if they haven't got the guts to confess to killing a two month old. The scumbags/moronic pieces of garbage must feel so strong and powerful for being able to accomplish that.

If the police are involved their is either more to the situation then any of us know OR the medical profession and the police have been pressured into investigating every unexplained child injury, stemming from previous situations where they have been criticised for not acting fast enough. Dammed if you do, damed if you don't. Since people are "pondering" here is a thought. From an elder's opinion right from the 2nd world war may Maori were left fatherless and to keep a long story short moved away from the family unit for jobs in the city hence strong parenting skills were left behind and so the cycle begins. So did the end of the job situations leading to welfare "state". As for the island communities the same welfare "state" came from low paid jobs and the mindset of upbringing not fitting in with the "western" way of exsisting. As for the european atrocities most of the common failings come from lack of discipline from the weak spineless system and the situation of both parents having to work just to get by and not enough time spent with their children. Now I have sorted everything I will fly off into the sunset and leave everything to the politicians to stuff everything up, including the european and Maori, asian and other ethnicities.

@pondering. Oh, please. It's exactly that sort of bleeding heart nonsense which is part of the reason why these sorts of deaths are allowed to be perpetuated. As @Mia said, the death was NON-ACCIDENTAL. Ie. someone willingly inflicted harm upon the baby. If someone is capable of doing such a thing, they can just as easily do it to anyone else. At the end of the day, what's more important? Not being treated with suspicion, or protecting the life of an innocent child?

@ pondering...Did you not read, it said the reason for death was caused by NON ACCIDENTAL INJURIES... that means there is an investigation and the children are taken away incase, YES because they need to be protected!!!!!! no one knows what happened and until they do the children will be in different care for their protection... if they dont take the children out of the home for the investigation and something happens, then you would be saying they didnt protect the children, was one death not enough to start protecting the other children...

This must be absolutely heart wrenching for the parents. Damned if you do , damned if you don't. Finding an infant not breathing and rushing it to hospital, desperately doing all you can, despite your efforts your baby loses its battle with life. It is a parents wildest nightmare. Then because you are young , poor and have a Polynesian name you are perceived as high risk and your baby's death suspicious. Your other children including 2 surviving infants are ripped off you. You are left with empty arms ... and the vicious trial by media starts. It is not acceptable to take children off young poor people "just in case" , when the high profile instances of child homicide occur through CYF negligence and unprofessional behaviours stemming mainly from a group of CYF branches and employees with outside associations with the offenders. Remove the siblings from harm in CYF care and keep them safe with the parents. That 5yr brother is aware of what is happening and is highly vulnerable to abuse in CYF care on top of his sister dying, then being ripped off his mother. Those little babies need their mum's love more than ever. Stop treating low socio parents and children like they are lower than farm animals.
