Hinekawa Topia, a triplet, was driven to Wanganui Hospital by her parents Tiffany Topia and Tom McGregor, on Thursday afternoon.
She wasn't breathing and resuscitation attempts by her father and hospital staff were unsuccessful, police say.
A post-mortem examination has revealed Hinekawa died of non-accidental head injuries.
Background inquiries are being made to help build a picture of events before Hinekawa's death and her health, Detective Senior Sergeant Neil Forlong said.
"We have to be thorough and meticulous and work closely with medical professionals, the pathologist and Hinekawa's family. That process will take time and should not be rushed."
Det Snr Sgt Forlon would not be drawn on the nature of Hinekawa's injuries.
Police will be speaking to a number of people today as Hinekawa had recently stayed at both the family home and with extended whanau
"We fully acknowledge the sensitivities of cases such as this and it is important that people do not leap to conclusions and start pointing fingers prematurely,” Det Snr Sgt Forlorn said.
"We have to be thorough and meticulous and work closely with medical professionals, the pathologist and Hinekawa's family. That process will take time and should not be rushed."
Police are understood to be sourcing CCTV footage to assist them, but would not comment on the nature of the footage.
Hinekawa's funeral was held on Sunday. Mr Forlon said the family is in a state of shock and grief.
About 20 police are working on the investigation.
One house in Whanganui and one in south Taranaki have been examined by forensic scientists in relation to the investigation.
Child, Youth and Family has interim custody of Hinekawa's triplet sisters and a five-year-old boy.
