Wanganui police are reviewing the cold case of a Fijian man who disappeared without a trace 12 years ago.

David Radovu, also known as Anitivasa Lewadeke, was last seen about 7.30pm on March 21, 1998 when his employer dropped him off at his caravan on Whanganui River Road.

Mr Radovu, 52, was living alone in the caravan and worked in the Whanganui River area as a scrub cutter.

He was reported missing two days later when he failed to turn up for work.

Police were reviewing the case to see whether the inquiry could be taken any further.

Detective Constable Aaron Bunker said Mr Radovu's disappearance was "totally out of character".

His bank account had not been touched and no-one was aware of any reason he might go missing, Mr Bunker said.

Foul play had not been ruled out but there were no obvious suspicious circumstances.

In the days following his disappearance, police carried out an extensive search over nearby farmland and a ravine.

Some scrub cutting equipment belonging to Mr Radovu was found on farmland where he worked but there was no sign of him.

A septic tank was also drained and searched.

Police were now trying to locate any of Mr Radovu's family members in New Zealand.

He had three children by a former partner, all of whom lived in Auckland at the time of his disappearance.

"We are keen to locate any members of David's family and we are also keen to see if anyone has any more information about David's disappearance that they felt they couldn't share 12 years ago but could share now," Mr Bunker said.
