Police and the armed offenders squad spent the afternoon looking for an armed gunman in bush north east of Kaitaia.
Police stopped a man on the road just after 1pm, he was armed, and fled into the bush.
Kaingaroa School was in lockdown for several hours, but the children all made it home safely.
The search has been suspended overnight and will resume tomorrow morning.
