A family member who was travelling with the Rotorua couple mistakenly credited with $10 million to their bank account returned to Auckland from Hong Kong at lunchtime today and is now speaking to police.
Police are urging the missing couple to do the same.
In a statement issued this afternoon, police said they wanted to speak to Leo Gao, 29, and Kara Mary Jo Hurring 30, (also known by the surname Yang), about the withdrawal of a large sum of money from a Westpac business account.
Rotorua service station owner Mr Gao asked for a $100,000 overdraft. When the bank sought to formalise the overdraft, it mistakenly credited $10m instead of the $100,000.
He then attempted to transfer amounts totalling around $6.7m but the bank managed to recover $2.8m.
He and his partner then left New Zealand, taking the woman's daughter.
Detective Senior Sergeant David Harvey urged Mr Gao and Ms Hurring to return.
"We are well aware of the events that have been associated with this opportunistic offending. This pair still have families in New Zealand and at some stage they may want to return to see them."
