Police continued their investigation for the attacker of a child in Turangi through Christmas Day

As the 5-year-old girl who was attacked at a Turangi camping ground on Wednesday enjoyed Christmas Day with her family, around 20 police officers worked through the day searching for those responsible for the assault.

Police have been working closely with the family and community and interviewing people who were in the area at the time of the attack as well as checking CCTV footage.

The young victim is on holiday in New Zealand with her family from Europe.

She was asleep in her caravan at Club Habitat Holiday Park when she was attacked between 10.10pm and 10.40pm on Wednesday.

She suffered injuries to her head and body in the attack and was later airlifted to Waikato Hospital where she underwent around four hours of surgery.

Staff at Waikato Hospital state her condition as stable and improving.
