Taupo police are asking visitors and locals to take care in New Zealand’s natural environment after two search and rescue operations in four days.
Five people have been rescued from the Tongariro National Park, where conditions have been poor for several days.
The head of Taupo Police Search and Rescue, Senior Constable Barry Shepherd, says the national park environment is challenging at the best of times, with changeable weather and reduced daylight hours adding to the potential risk.
Conditions are expected to get worse with more heavy rain and snow forecast for this weekend, says Mr Shepherd.
“We live in one of the most stunning and attractive regions in New Zealand, and quite rightly, it is a huge attraction for locals and visitors alike,” he says.
“But unfortunately, when things go wrong in this environment, there is no margin for error – particularly at this time of year.”
Mr Shepherd urged trampers to be well prepared, take the right food, maps, clothing and equipment and check the weather forecast.
He also encouraged locals and tourism operators to ensure visitors had the right information to stay safe and well-prepared.
“There is a severe weather warning in place for the area for the next few days, including heavy rain and snow. We would far rather people postpone their trip – rather than it be their last.”
