A journalism expert says the legal system has drawn a line in the sand by taking a New Zealand blogger to court for breaching suppression – rather than just handing out a warning.
Cameron Slater – of the blog 'Whale Oil' – is accused of posting pictorial clues, identifying individuals in two high-profile sexual offence cases involving an Olympian and a well-known entertainer.
Canterbury University associate professor of journalism Jim Tully says the case will deter other bloggers who may be flouting the law online.
“Once this case becomes more widely known, as it will over the next two, three days, then I don’t think anybody will say ‘I didn’t know that I couldn’t do that’, and the onus is on people who want to have blogs to acknowledge that name suppression is there and it has to be abided by.”
Professor Tully says the case highlights the dilemma faced by officials of how to deal with the impact of the internet on legal issues.
