If the world didn't know who Brittany Broben was before the London Olympics, at least three million people do now.

The 16-year-old - Australia's youngest Games competitor - overcame a nervous final session to claim a surprise silver medal in yesterday's 10-metre platform diving final.

She finished second behind China's repeat gold medallist Chen Ruolin and ahead of compatriot Melissa Wu, who missed out on a medal by 1.1 points.

The Gold Coast schoolgirl was quick to thank her supporters on Twitter after the win, including Australian-born teenage pop star Cody Simpson.

"congratulations @Brittany_broben ! we're both doing our home town proud <3 #goldcoastREPRESENT" he shared with his 3.08 million followers.

She replied: "@CodySimpson just made this night that much better! Thankyou so much for the message :)"

Broben also received a well-earned congratulations from fellow diver Matthew Mitcham - who this week was named the most influential Australian athlete on Twitter.

"@Brittany_broben YOU ARE MY FREAKING HERO!!!!" he posted.

Broben described her victory as the "best night of my life" and joked that it might now be time to get an Olympic tattoo.

Despite her elation, the teenager was left to celebrate by herself in the athletes' village and was still tweeting well past 2.30am.

"All the girls are out! But I don't mind staying home alone with my medal haha #LO2012 can't believe it" Broben wrote.

"Have to get up in 4 hours! Don't know if it's even worth going to sleep :)"
