A post-mortem will be carried out on remains found in a Christchurch cemetery as police search for the body of missing teen Hayden Miles.

The remains, which police say are human, were found at the Ruru Lawn Cemetery in Linwood on Tuesday, a day after police cordoned off part of the graveyard to begin their search.

They have described the cemetery as a crime scene and a forensic pathologist has been helping police at the scene.

The remains were not formally identified on Tuesday and police hope the post-mortem will determine how the person died.

Hayden, 16, was last seen around Cashel Street on August 22 and police have charged a 27-year-old unemployed man with his murder.

An 18-year-old woman was charged with being an accessory after the fact.
