Things weren’t looking bright for Phil Goff as he took Labour's campaign to Hawkes Bay today – the Labour leader has problems with his potential coalition partners.

Winston Peters has ruled him out, and the Greens are now openly out to steal his votes.

Mr Goff was out to attract voters young and old today, following a kindergarten visit with a Grey Power meeting.

Thirty-one people turned up to see him speak at the Hastings meeting, summing up the problem for Mr Goff – Labour has fired most of its policy shots and spent its money for its promises, but halls are still half-empty just 17 days before the election.

Mr Peters recently drew 300 people at the same venue, but while voters might be keen almost every party has ruled him out – except for Mr Goff.

The Greens are a supposed ally, but today co-leader Russel Norman said he wanted to get the party to 15 percent in the polls, and asked Labour voters to “vote Green”.

Mr Goff is “doing his best to try and get the Labour party in a strong position,” Dr Norman says, but whether this will be good enough is “for the Labour party to decide”.

Meanwhile in Nelson, Prime Minister John Key was also at a Grey Power meeting, and managed to draw 100 pensioners.

What skills and education do we have as a nation to competently vote? Democracy comes in handy on Election Day and was hard fought for, but what use is it when half the population are either driven to distraction by jealousy, struggling to make ends meet or just permanently scarred by successive governments who have repeatedly lacked the courage to accept responsibility for, and take action to fix, gaps that the well-heeled either won't, or can't, see. We are a nation at risk, and we need a government, ANY government, capable of doing one thing. Governing. One which has the naus to understand there are things which need taking care of at home, and away.

As Graeme Burbery put it, quote: Some of its people are the problem! I agree. Its people such as Graeme, Paul B and HHH that don't see the bigger picture at all. It seems that folks who think they have a bit of money assume that the ones without or are impovished are lefty moaners and/or system bludgers who love to sit around and watch Sky all day. Pathetic assumptions but I see and hear it so often. Key isn't doing a good job nor will he ever. That man doesn't care what New Zealanders think or say. He clearly stated that on the news last night! Why is it that New Zealanders thought that the fortunes of a wealthy individual would have a beneficial pay off?. Key only brought his money to the table and that's all, nothing else, so it's obvious that the majority of Kiwis have that queer idea of fortune and fame. It happened before in New Zealand with Winston Peters. Look at what the people of Tauranga did to him after many many years of dedication to a city he loved. They elected some twit who back then, flashed a bit of money around. What did he actually do for Tauranga in the short period of time except gift a sports stadium? Squat! Tsk tsk NZ. The main problem we are facing comes from the inadequate leadership we are currently in as well as the poorly educated and misled mindset of the majority. And I don't mean schooled education either. Get away from National leadership!! New Zealand has not been built nor is it based around Nationalism. We are a small island of 4.3million people in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea. This country was built and will grow on small to medium enterprises yet Key is adamant to see NZ owned by foreign interests. He is handing out New Zealand to the highest bidding overseas vulcher. How many examples do you need to see? Look at Crafar farms. Key with all his supposed money influence and knowledge should have intervened and quashed Pengxin but he didn't. National/Key are not for New Zealand and they are not working for all of our interests but in order to understand that and see it for what it is, you have to stop being selfish and actually think of everyone.

G Norton and Sean, we cannot afford to repeat National three years of disaster, therfore he must leave office on the 26th day of November 2011 and give the Labour Government a chance of retriveing the country back to civilization and with all Parties should vote Labour and the Greens should maintained itself for the environment of New Zealand and worldwide.. Mr. Peters has also spoken that he wanted to lead and serve the country but Mr. Goff and his Parties have always been on the face of the earth where Mr. Peters had a relax since Helen Clark left.. rethink buddies..

Good grief so many Kiwis are brainwashed or ignorant to what is going on around the world at the moment. We desperately needed to cut public sector workers or we'd turn into Greece.
We needed to cut taxes to get people to spend, or our companies would go bust and we need less people on benefits or we'll crash like much of Europe.
Even China said this week that they couldn't bail out the EU economy because it was too generous in welfare - and that's from a communist country!

National are doing a good job, despite borrowing to pay for Labours past spending binges and other items to keep you fickle voters happy like Working For Families. Middle NZ should be rejoycing that we have a Government that is working hard to keep out of our lives and not sticking its nose in like the last lot.

Oh man what a bunch of lefty moaners! Yeah that's it lets punish all those that actually provide all this countries revenue in the first place. Why? Because we're just vindictive and ignorant. Lets drive the contributors our of the country them we can all be equally poor together. Why don't you try looking at yourselves instead of sitting there with your hands out?

I despair over the comments of many of these bloggers. I really do think that these people are purely self-serving with no interest in the bigger picture. Apart from the overall world financial mess NZ has been severely hit with natural disasters which the current government has had to bear. The Labour Party is bent on seemingly enhancing the State's contribution to people already on welfare who are a drain on society. There's no real "poverty" in this country! It's a poverty of responsibility that's the problem! There's a section of people whose lives are consumed by alcohol, drugs and SKY TV. Dozens of innocent children are neglected completely as their parents pursue their aimless and unproductive lifestyle. This country has huge potential! Some of its people are the problem!
