We've seen many successful sporting partnerships in New Zealand over the years, but it's not often these husband and wife duos are administrators.
With the recent success of the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic and the Chiefs both taking out their competitions, there are two people who make the link between the two championship winning teams.
“[It’s the] first time we've sat down and relaxed,” says chief executive of the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic Sheryl Dawson. “It’s so surreal. It’s been a little bit rushed and lots of excitement, but really a great way to finish so well together."
It has taken years of hard work, but finally the power couple have achieved their ultimate goal, with the Super Rugby title still sinking in after the victory parade just yesterday.
“It’s really standing back and watching the people having a great time and enjoying it and knowing that in a small way, you've made that happen,” says chief executive of the Chiefs Gary Dawson.
Less than three weeks ago, the Magic were victorious, becoming the first Kiwi side to win the ANZ Championship, and despite Mr Dawson having his own team to worry about, he was there.
"I find Gary really supportive,” says Ms Dawson. “He's always been there for me. I think of when we went to Melbourne for that final, I had Gary driving me all round the place to help me find the right bananas, the right yoghurts."
They admit their roles can be a challenging assignment.
"It can be a bit tough when your team’s winning and the other team’s loosing, but [we] are pretty supportive of each other,” says Mr Dawson.
But while they are in charge of their respective teams, duties are shared at home. Mr Dawson says he is in control of the remote.
“But I'm losing control of it rapidly. So I've got the couch and the remote at the moment but not for too much longer I think.”
