Powerboat breaks Auckland to Great Barrier round trip speed record.

Five minutes to 9am, and the traffic is still crawling over the Auckland Harbour Bridge as offshore powerboat Fariview speeds under.

While the commuters above are contemplating their days work ahead, it is job done for Warren Lewis and John Mclean.

Just over an hour earlier they had left the bridge bound for Great Barrier Island.

Their goal was to break the 15-year-old record for the 180km round trip from the bridge to Tryphena Harbour.

By ferry it is an eight hour return voyage - the record stood at 1 hour, 45min.

Once clear of the inner harbour speed limit, Fairview was able to stretch her legs.

The two 525 horsepower engines - make the ten metre long catamaran capable of close to 220km per hour.

But, Mr Lewis says that is only if conditions allow.

On the return leg it was the helicopters turn to struggle. With the calmer waters, it allowed the boat to touch 210km/h an hour - which is top speed for the chopper.

With an average speed of over 160km/h an hour they smashed the record by 27 minutes.
