A swarm of earthquakes struck Canterbury this morning – centred, unusually, near the small town of Prebbleton.

This is unusual as the two faultlines responsible for much of the seismic activity of the past year are Greendale, to the west, and Port Hills to the east.

The two faults are seen as quite distinct, but Prebbleton is right in between them – so what’s causing all the activity?

Professor Yarg Pettinga, head of the University of Canterbury’s geology department, explains.
