She's known for being out there, but in reality Kelis is a somewhat demure star.

She says she makes music because it makes her feel good.

And all she wants from it is to make others feel the same.

“That's really the goal at the end of the day, to make something that makes someone feel great and make a part of their life you know,” she says.

The multi-award winning artist has sold 6 million albums worldwide and says she can only put her success down to following her instincts.

Her latest album Flesh Tone is different from the other three, she reckons that's because she was pregnant when she wrote it.

“You know, they always say with creative women, they say it's a really good time. I don't know why exactly, but it's inevitable you know, that we're women you know, and we're emotional and in touch and sensitive, strong and all these things when we're not pregnant, so when we are pregnant I think it just intensifies all these things that we are,” she says.

Kelis's 18-month-old son Knight won't see her play tomorrow night, it'll be well past his bedtime, but she still counts him as one of her biggest fans.

While Kelis was pregnant and recording, she also went through a break up with the rapper Nas.

“Its' so over. Like it's been years now, so.”

Kelis says as things change, so does her music.

She says she'll adapt things tomorrow night when she plays at Splore in Auckland depending on how she feels. She's still not sure what to wear or what her set list will be.

All she can promise is that fans will be in for a few surprises.
