Prime Minister John Key held a press conference this morning detailing the deaths of three soldiers killed overnight in Afghanistan.

The three soldiers, Corporal Luke Tamatea, 31, Lance Corporal Jacinda Baker, 26, and Private Richard Harris, aged 21, were killed during an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) incident in the North East of Bamiyan Province.

Ms Baker is the first New Zealand female soldier to have died in Afghanistan.

Mr Key said New Zealand troops will continue to work in the province and will not be withdrawn early.

NZDF Lieutenant General Rhys Jones and Defence Minister Jonathan Coleman also spoke.
