Prince William has thrown organisers of a welcoming hangi in Auckland into a tizz by telling them that instead of red meat, he wants salmon.

The prince's dietary preferences after he arrives on Sunday are causing a few headaches, the ABC reported.

Sixty guests have been invited to a traditional Maori hangi in Auckland, and organisers have spent about $500 on the best cuts of meat in New Zealand.

Feast organiser Rahera Paul said the menus included "hangi pork, yummy hangi lamb and hangi sirloin beef" but instead of red meat, the prince wanted salmon.

The problem for Ms Paul is that the fish will cook in a minute or so, and being steamed for hours in an earth oven might reduce it to sludge.

"Let's hope everyone loves the stuffing," said Ms Paul who still hopes Prince William may try some NZ lamb from the hangi.

I feel for the people that organised the hangi, although maybe they should have metioned it to the people planning his trip from the other end before arriving. Most young people don't eat a lot of meat these days in saying that we have lovely salmon here, hopefully there was also some of it at the dinner as well. It's all about hospitality at the end of the day, one mouthful won't hurt.

Good on William. He clearly knows that fish is a far healthier option over meat and in particular salmon- which is rich in Omega's. It's great to see a young man stand up for what he wants and not be bullied into eating something that's traditional hangi food and not particularly healthy anyway. Why anyone would want to eat pig meat after all the negative publicity is completely baffling. Our best meat cuts are exported anyway- so if he wants to try lamb, he'd be better off trying it in the UK. Zena
