@ ex
They aren't gonna suffer as much as prison staff are. Shame National didn't build more 'seg' units before this ridiculous law. Cause they are gonna need them

We reap what we sow.Sick and unhealthy methods of raising families results in adults who only know sick and unhealthy methods of living.

By the majority of the comments so far I am assuming many of you people are non-smokers.
Smoking is an addiction. Smoking is very much a form of stress relief. I don't think anybody would want to be near me and my mood if I was out of tobacco.
If you are all so concerned about 'health' then maybe the prison or motorway could be moved. The pollution from that alone will be doing more harm to prisoners' health than smoking.
Forget the passive smoker... what about all you passive deisel/fuel emmisions, passive cell tower radiations, passive airport taxi zones, passive you-name-its. Plenty out there, just stand in the under-cover carpark at your local mall for 5 mins and you'll be a passive pollution lol.
People have every right to smoke. And while the taxpayer is not paying for prisoners' smokes... what the hell do you care. And as many of you imply, prisoners are scum anyway so again I ask, why do you care so much?
I for one would hate to work in a prison after the end of this month.
On that note I'm off to have a smoke 8o)

Prisoners are people too. feed them well, permit smoking in designated areas, pay them well for their work in the prison work system, and help make the average officer's life less risky, and perhaps more beneficial personally, and to their wards.
win all round...

Alien and others seem to have lost sight of the fact that the smoking ban was to be introduced as a health measure. It is not intended as a punitive measure. You should all gain a sense of perspective before going on line with these absurd and ill-informed comments. Lack of concern for prisoner welfare generally would suggest the ban will have little public support.

So prohibition, which never works is used.Wait till " I could kill for a cigarette" comes true.

Oh well. When the inmates protest and riot replace the cigarettes with tear gas. But the PC brigade will cry foul and claim the rapists and kiddy fiddlers should be allowed to smoke. Ridiculous how prisoners have so many benefits.

It is getting progressively difficult to smoke on the outside (real life!) so why should it be easier for the scum on the inside? You do the crime, you do the time. If that means 'smoke free' so be it!!
