Police say he was found on Thursday evening, hiding in the ceiling of a house in Taupo

The inmate who escaped from a prison work party after hotwiring a Department of Corrections vehicle has been recaptured.

Jamie Paamu Hughes, 29, an inmate at Rangipo Prison near Turangi, fled from a group working in a nearby forest about 11:15am on Tuesday.

Police say he was found on Thursday evening, hiding in the ceiling of a house in Taupo.

He will appear in Taupo District Court on Friday, charged with a number of offences relating to his escape.
