Four female staff at Spring Hill Prison have left their jobs in the past 18 months after forming relationships with inmates.

The Waikato Times reports the four women either quit or resigned from their roles at the facility near Meremere after "inappropriate relationships".

The Department of Corrections confirmed to the paper that 11 female prison officers nationwide have been investigated for relationships with inmates since January last year.

It said another incident was being investigated at Waikeria Prison, south of Te Awamutu.

The paper said a source had told it one of the officers had a relationship with a gang member jailed for manslaughter, while another incident involved an inmate serving a sentence for grievous bodily harm.

Corrections would not confirm details of the cases.
