Five Rimutaka Prison inmates have appeared in court over an alleged attack on a prison guard.
The men, aged between 19 and 28, entered no pleas when they appeared in Lower Hutt District Court on Wednesday and were remanded to reappear in three weeks, Radio New Zealand reports.
They face charges relating to an incident at the Upper Hutt prison late last month, where the prison guard was attacked after he went to the aid of a low-security prisoner under attack by a group of inmates.
The guard was placed in an induced coma following the attack in which he suffered undisclosed injuries.
A Corrections Department spokeswoman told NZ Newswire the man was still in rehabilitation. No further information was available.
Corrections is investigating the alleged attack.
