Pro-smacking campaigner joins Auckland mayoralty race

3 News understands a new candidate is about to join the race to be mayor of Auckland's new supercity.

Property manager Colin Craig, the man who bankrolled last November's so-called 'March for Democracy' to the tune of $450,000.

The 41-year old worked with lobby groups Family First and the Sensible Sentencing Trust on the protest against the anti-smacking legislation.

Turnout for the march was smaller than expected with only around 5,000 people attending, despite the advertising blitz.
