A New Plymouth District councillor, who last week staged a protest against a Cambodian-owned takeaway joint in Waitara, has resigned from her post in the local business association.

Sherril George handed out brochures outside Waitara's Town and Country Food on Wednesday last week, urging people to boycott the store, in a protest Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres said was "deplorable".

Ms George, who owns a pizzeria in Waitara, said she wanted people to support their "local community" and argued Town and Country Food was a franchise driving other businesses out.

Ms George resigned from her post on the Waitara Business Promotions Association on Saturday, with executive member Craig McFarlane saying she had also apologised for her actions, the Taranaki Daily News reported.

Town and Country Food owner Hoyt Khuon, who runs the shop with his family and has lived in New Zealand since 1998, told NZPA last week he was shocked by Ms George's actions but he had received at least 100 calls of support in the day following her protest.

"I am not a foreigner, I am a Kiwi. I hold a New Zealand passport," he said.

Ms George's protest did not intimidate him and he was able to keep his sense of humour.

"I'm not scared about what she's trying to do...I've got a lot of people supporting me -- even the mayor."

Yay, Sherril! You go, girl! Your brilliant strategy to put Town and Country firmly on the map was a stroke of genius. You can't even buy publicity like that. No doubt Saatchi and Saatchi will be headhunting you any day now, but please don't sell out, because Waitara needs people like you. As you are clearly a forward-thinking individual with a dynamic entrepreneurial spirit, I'm sure you would have had the presence of mind to secure a majority of Town and Country's shares before you pounded the pavement, leaflets in hand, and you're now laughing all the way to the bank. No wonder you've already chucked in your job at the Waitara Business Promotion Association. Council job the next one to go, no doubt – hey, who needs it? They pay peanuts. You can't wait to now take that world cruise, can you? You simply leave me speechless. Well done!

Joris is a joke...so vocal and opinionated on europeans when they say stupid things but when Hone opens his mouth its freedom of speech. Joris is a joke sucking away on the public tit happy at a whim to white bash.

How odd. It's interesting how business welcome competition when it comes to goods and services that they buy, but when it comes to goods or services that they sell, they don't want any competition. It seems to be the same no matter whether the business is large like Telecom or a small town pizza place.
