A Napier publican critically injured when he crashed while riding a child's bicycle down a hill during a Christmas party has died.

Brazenhead Pub owner Richard Irvine had his life support switched off in Hawke's Bay Hospital last night.

Mr Irvine was taken to hospital on Sunday, after apparently falling off a child-sized BMX bike while riding at high speed, down a steep slope.

The incident took place at a work party, police said.
