John McKay won the Mapua Mega Pumpkin competition with his pumpkin weighing 616kg.

He started growing pumpkins after seeing giant pumpkins on television.

His daughter Anika won the children's prize with a 384kg pumpkin.

The winning pumpkins are now on display at Mitre 10 in Nelson.
