A Qantas 737-800 flying from Auckland to Melbourne has arrived back in Auckland, after turning around mid-flight following a lightning strike.

There are no reports of injuries on board the flight, and fire appliances at Auckland Airport are not on standby, despite reports of a strong smell of smoke in the cabin.

The plane's decision to return is a precautionary measure.
