Christchurch was rocked last night by a powerful aftershock that struck on the day the city marked the first anniversary of last year's earthquake.
The magnitude 4.4 tremor was located 20 kilometres west of Christchurch and was comparatively shallow, at seven kilometres below the earth's surface.
