Christchurch was rocked last night by a powerful aftershock that struck on the day the city marked the first anniversary of last year's earthquake.

The magnitude 4.4 tremor was located 20 kilometres west of Christchurch and was comparatively shallow, at seven kilometres below the earth's surface.

One year on from the magnitude 7.1 quake Government ministers will hold their weekly Cabinet meeting in Christchurch today, the first time it has been held outside Wellington in 16 years.

Prime Minister John Key says it will be useful for all ministers to get a broader idea about how the city's recovering instead of just a few of them.

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee is continuing to come under fire after telling residents in the red zone in June that home improvements made after 2007 would be reimbursed.

He's since had to do a u-turn and at the weekend apologised to the people of Christchurch.

Yesterday, thousands turned out for a group hug in Christchurch's Botanic Gardens to commemorate the quake.

They had hoped for a world record but organiser Andrew Male says despite missing out he was rapt with the result.

In the last year there have been more than seven and a half thousand quakes and aftershocks in the region.

Take note of the times that most of the after shocks occur is from midnight till day break.just look at the map on Christchurch aftershocks, and some are with a few minutes of one and other, today so far 8 has been recorded.Yes if you were able too accurately fore cast these aftershocks, you should be able to pick the numbers in lotto each draw,Maybe the odds would be fairly even.John! Ken did say that it was going to happen in September, but at the end of the month,Not something that you would want to look foward to after the destruction we have all ready been through, terror and loss of love ones.

John, there was over 7500 earthquakes in the past year, that's over 600 a month, what does that tell us? that there is going to be a lot of earthquakes every month. So how is it impressive at all that he predicted an earthquake in a place that gets earthquakes non stop? It's like predicting there will be fish at a fish market.

@John Not sure if you've noticed but aftershocks occur on a pretty much daily basis. I predict that there will be one next week, now give me money.

A lot of crap stories are developing--7500 after shocks etc [20 a day at that rate]. It beats me. If i had a family in Canterbury,i would have them out as soon as i could.
Tiz a terrible thing but nothing can be done, and those that claim to fortell the future are Dip-Sticks.
