A quake of 4.5 magnitude shook Wellington this evening.

It struck 20 km northwest of the city, at a depth of 40km.

There are no reports yet of any damage, though it could be felt from as far as Blenheim.

Staff in the TV3 newsroom in the capital said it was strong enough to make them jump under their desks.

On the 3 News Facebook page, Taryn Ibell wrote: "Slow shaking for bout 20 seconds then bout 10 seconds of violent shaking, then back to slow shaking as it rolled away."

James Anderson wrote: "I think I shat my pants!!"

Sam Pradeep emailed 3 News, saying: "It was bit violent, but short lived. Now i can feel what Cantabrians would have gone through last week."

Others have asked whether 'Moon Man' Ken Ring predicted it.

Send any pictures or stories to noles@tv3.co.nz.

Half an hour after the Wellington shake, Christchurch was hit with another aftershock measuring 4.6.

Very Sorry for all involoved at Christchurch! I Notice that nobody seems to mention more major earthquakes could still strike in the future!!! This could be at any moment, or the coming days. First, they should have mentioned risk surrounding full moon last week, and there WAS some discussion of upcoming earthquakes prior to Chch, feel free to read my EQ Blog at www.earthquakealert.blogspot.com Thank-You and BE Prepared!!! I think that anyone comparing the size of an earthquake no matter where it is has got something wrong with them. When our Country is suffering we should all be banding together not bitching about who has had a bigger quake.

It isn't a competition you guys, an earthquake in chc or wlg or napier freaks me out and i'm in akl for crying out loud! They are scary and truth being that no one really knows whos in for the next big one, so stop all the nonsense and start praying for each other! A shake is a shake and is unnerving at the best of times!

Hey canterbury folks it's not a competition.. i'm sure after what has happened recently people all over the country are just a bit on edge. But yes it was nowhere near as bad as what you have had to go through down south.

I have read some of these posts and to be completely honest I feel for anyone who goes through an earthquake at the moment but I am sorry lil shake to joke about your wife thinking it was her getting off the couch when last week we got thrown on the floor with no warning is a bit too much to take. try having things falling on you like a tv or cans of goods if you are in a supermarket or even glass or how about a building.
I think everyone should thank their lucky stars that we are not one of those poor people who died last week and stop making the jokes on something that has and is serious
