Wellington Sevens fans still out in the early hours of the morning may have felt a little unsteady on their feet - and not from the alcohol.

A magnitude-5 earthquake, 190km deep, struck 70km northeast of Collingwood, Golden Bay at 5.16am this morning, according to GNS Science.

It was largely felt in Wellington, Lower Hutt and Kapiti Coast, Fairfax reported.
