Two earthquakes struck within half an hour of each other in the North and South Islands overnight.
The first, a 3.7-magnitude quake at a depth of 20km, hit about 10.11pm last night 40km east of Napier. It was felt in Napier and Clive, GNS Science said.
Twenty five minutes later, a stronger 4-magnitude quake at a depth of 9km was felt in Christchurch. The quake was centred 10km east of the city.
More than 10,000 quakes have shaken Christchurch since September 4, 2010.
