Queen honours NZ Herald of Arms

The man in charge of heraldry in New Zealand, Philip O'Shea, has been upgraded in Britain's New Year Honours.

Mr O'Shea has been made a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, which recognises service to the reigning monarch or the royal family.

He was previously a Lieutenant of Royal Victorian Order and is a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Mr O'Shea was appointed the first New Zealand Herald of Arms Extraordinary to the Queen in 1978 and administered the New Zealand honours system for 30 years until retiring in 2004.

The New Zealand Herald of Arms' duties include advising the Government and departments on heraldic matters, liaising with the College of Arms in the UK on genealogies and attending the Queen or governor-general on ceremonial occasions.
