A Queenstown man is in a coma with head injuries after being bashed at a nightclub.
The 26-year-old was assaulted about 3am on Saturday at the Subculture nightclub, said Detective Matt Jones of Queenstown police.
Det Jones said it appeared the victim was standing in the bar near a door leading to the games room when he got into a fight with another man.
He ended up on the floor unconscious as a result.
The man was taken to Lakes District Hospital before being transferred to Invercargill and then on to Dunedin Hospital, where he required surgery.
Det Jones said he remained in Dunedin Hospital in an induced coma and in a critical but stable condition.
About 30 people were in the club when the assault happened. Police have spoken to some but are keen to hear from more.
