'Racist' YouTube clip lands filmmaker in trouble

3News NZ

A Perth filmmaker's attempt to "lampoon" racist attitudes towards Aborigines has backfired.

Simon Barker has been charged with aggravated conduct likely to cause racial harassment over a clip posted to YouTube which shows white Australians dressed as Aborigines, drinking and engaging in criminal activity.

Barker claims it was a "crude, in-your-face" attempt to "create an awareness of the issues faced by Aboriginals".

This was an overreaction. It wasn't a big deal. There was obviously no malice in the clip.

Anyone with half a brain can clearly see that the film maker is clearly not a racist. It is such a shame that the law is trying to punish him for trying to help people just like he did when he sold his house to risk his life in Burma to make a documentary on the plight of the Karen people.

@ Nathaniel

I'm glad U don't live in Australia as well!

Maybe U should move 2 the NT where the racial discrimination act has been suspended so U can be picked on & abused because U say no one cares anyway... So U think plaigerising someone elses song & adding black-faced stereotypes is creative, well maybe ur right about everyone growing up then, so that should include U @ the top of the list.

Freedom 2 hate is NOT Free Speech!

Glad i don't live in Australia, it's now illegal to have an opinion. Even if he is racist, who cares? thats his right. And from what i could see this video doesn't tell/encourage people to go and abuse/attack/discriminate against aboriginals. Grow up everyone, this is the death of creativity and free speech.
