Still from Rango

Still from Rango

Reviewed by Kate Rodger

Rango is a lizard, a domesticated chameleon with a penchant for theatrics, who finds himself lost in the desert lacking the life skills to survive the wild west.

He tumbles into the town of Dirt, managing to trick the town's bedraggled assortment of residents into believing he's the hero they need to help restore their water supply. Rango blags his way into the sheriff’s office, and through a series of mishaps, misdeeds, misadventures and misfires, Rango faces off against his own destiny.

In keeping with his chameleon nature Rango the movie is an interesting beast who will be different things to different people. This movie is some parts strange, some parts dark, most parts hilarious and all parts animated.

For my part, I loved every minute, as the filmmakers tip their Stetson at everything from the spaghetti western to Hunter S Thompson.

So is Rango family friendly? It’s PG, and while those parental guardians will have plenty to entertain them, pick the hardier kids to take, there's some pretty scary vermin in this thar desert.

If you love animation, love Westerns and love Johnny Depp, there is no place to go but Rango.

Four and a half stars.

Hi Marci / Melanie (you're the same person, right?). It's a wonderful movie, not really for kids... but I loved it. Great story, great references... just great.

It was horrible!!!!!!!!!!you hear "Damn you - go to Hell, and "You son of a ---(the bird squawks) there is a naked barbie and Rango says ''are those real"...Really!!, it just isn't a kids movie. Lots of swearing. At nearly 2 hours, it drags we were bored. Movie was awful.Best family movie of the year and 4 stars, they are really trying so hard to get people in to see this and they need to pull the plug on this one and not even bring it to DVD!!!

I loved this movie so much! I took my 6 year-old brother to it yesterday, and he loved every second of it. It was funny, it was interesting, and the animation was amazing. I am 17, and even I laughed my head off!

I loved every minute. It was every aspect I love about Westerns in the one film, and Timoty Olyphant's turn as the Spirit of the West was brilliant.
